Dr. Mark Schoemann is a double board certified plastic surgeon specializing in ear pinning surgery and other facial surgery procedures. Dr. Schoemann is one of the elite few plastic surgeons who are double board certified in San Diego specializing in otoplasty surgery.
Many children with prominent ears are teased and picked on which leads to low self-esteem later in life. By performing an otoplasty, or ear pinning, Dr. Schoemann is able to reshape and reduce the size of the ears boosting the patient’s self confidence. Dr. Schoemann hides the incision behind the ear and uses sutures to reshape the delicate cartilage framework of the ear and pull it closer to the scalp. Sometimes a small amount of cartilage needs to be removed to improve the appearance. Ears reach about 80% of their adult size at about the age of five or six, so ear pinning at childhood if fine. If ear pinning was not done at childhood it is a simple procedure for adults and teens. Dr. Schoemann underwent additional training in pediatric plastic surgery that included the latest otoplasty as well as ear reconstruction techniques to give you an optimal result.
You or Your Child are a Candidate for Ear Pinning if You have the Following;
For children ear pinning is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. For adults and teens ear pinning is a relatively comfortable procedure done under local sedation. Dr. Schoemann will make an incision behind the ear cutting away the cartilage of the ear causing the protrusion outward.
Following the procedure a wraparound head and ear dressing will be applied for several days. The pain and discomfort from this procedure is minimal and very tolerable even for children.
